I want to be like the crocus that “burst into bloom; and rejoice greatly and shout for joy” (Isaiah 35: 1) It is easy to slip in to the mundane and routine aspects of our life but God has something more beautiful and joy-filled in store for our lives.
I love the theme throughout the bible of the tree being planted by water-when a tree is planted by the water it’s roots grow deep and the fruit it bears is nourishing to all those who enjoy it. I long for the same thing in my life. By planting myself before the Lord and drinking deeply of his Word my roots will grow deep and strong-wherever I may be.
When I was reading that passage in Jeremiah this morning something else struck me-trees need more than water to thrive. Without water the tree will shrivel up and be useless–just like when we aren’t rooted in the word our lives begin to unravel. But trees also need sunshine, fertilizer, and from once in a while a little pruning to grow strong roots. A day spent with family makes my world a little brighter. Time spent loving on precious kids enriches my life and causes me to grow a little bit more. A good conversation over a cup of coffee with a friend speaks truth into my life and provides that bit of pruning we all need.
